What does the success of Galatasaray depend?

The Substructure of the success which led
Galatasaray to UEFA Cup

The main titles of our interview

with the greatest interpreter

of Turkish Football Doğan Kologlu.

The origin of Galatasaray Club is the Galatasaray College. Who has founded this club, then? The 10th year students in the high school (Lycee), and it is the first football club in Turkey, this is important...

I think, GS has no chance to be a fanatic club. If it were, it would have to change during the time. There is a fundamental culture. An incredible culture personality like Ali Sami Yen has founded it. Whose relative is Sıddık Sami Bey, who made the first Turkish Dictionary...

GS has come with a specially lucky substructure. There is a strong solidarity. In the sports there should be. The Greek has made a nice addition to the definition of sports. What does defeat mean? To fall down on the ground. How do you treat a defeated man in sports? The Greek say: "defeat is to fall down, and who falls down submits to the Mother Earth Gea, and the Mother Earth is fecund and blessing, and she revives him and raises him afoot again"; just like you get your production every year from the Earth. As the Greek mythology created sports and and the Olympiades, this mythological explanation is logical. In Old Greece it is said that "voyaging on foot" is living like Pythagoras and Plato. Sports has many links with culture. As GS came over depending upon culture, and as the GS leaders fod a long time have been the presidents of the Olympic Committee, it has been based un a strong foundation...

Then the GS High School became the Enderun School, that is the Ottoman Imperial College, where bureaucracy was educated there. Or, if we should express more correctly, there were children brought from tha Balkans and from Libia, they were schooled and formated here, and when they returned home they represented and kept the Ottoman system on. There are also foreigners in the foundation of GS. Ali Sami Yen is an Albanian. The Albanian asked for his bones. He is such a valuable person...

And now, is there any such a well educated trainer like Fatih (Terim)? The case is this: not a Turkish trainer could clime to his level. He went to Italy and has been respected there. They called him Emperor. And a dialog has started. Now, if you go to Fiorentina today, you'll find smiling faces...

And the newcomers follow the tradition. They see that, if they can not play as good as the goneaways they can't succeed. The example of Perez. Perez, has learned football in Turkey. And now he's going back to France, and he can play there in any team he likes. The same with Victoria...

There came successful teachers like Derwall and Feldkamp. There came Mustafa Denizli, Derwall's pupil. He let me keep Denizli, and said: "Be careful about this boy, he will be successful. And he was successful. Then came Terim, and later Lucescu. GS is the creation of these names. Everything happens with the accumulation of long years. It is evolving increasingly. How did Manchester United became like this? It is the production of a long run. And so, this is the difference between GS and the other clubs. GS has tradition. And in sports the tradition is important. The roots are still here...

We learned; Galatasaray has taught us to challenge Europe. Fatih Terim went to England by after the eventful Leeds match just by himself, and he said "I can come so by myself". He encouraged everybody. There is such a mentality, which reflects to our football. What we call Galatasaray school is just defying Europe, that's all. And if now Barcelona is coming to Turkey with a hope of a tie, this accomplishment belongs to Galatasaray...
